-elect and congressman chris murphy here with us. senator blumenthal, you spent last of the 48 hours here. >> i spent a good part of the last two days in this community and i must, first of all, give me thanks to the governor for his strength and determination but also to the community which has really come together and demonstrated a kind of fiber and faith that is remarkable. i spent time in this community before and always been impressed by the real links and bonds, the people you know and the ambulance and fire department are largely volunteer, so that many of the heroic stories here are about volunteers coming forward and trying to deal with this searing, almost unbearable pain that so many feel knowing the families, knowing the victims and, of course, as a parent myself, four children, i can really have some sense of what they are going through. >> and, congressman, this is in your district. you've been representing it for many years and i've seen this in the last couple of days. this is a community that is tightly tied together talking to monsignor weiss. he had baptized many of t children in
with new calls for action. >> reporter: connecticut senator richard bloomenthal and senator-elect chris murphy met wednesday with a group called newtown united. residents came together after the shooting to push for a ban on assault weapons. >> good morning. >> reporter: they may have a new supporter in president obama. he wants new laws to try to prevent another tragedy like the one at sandy hook elementary school. >> the fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence. >> reporter: as head of the president's task force, vice president biden will look into banning assault weapons, but gun advocates say that's not necessary. >> there are lots of things we can do to make sure that only the right people have firearms. >> reporter: there will be at least nine more funerals or viewings today. on wednesday, each of the victims was remembered in his or her own special way. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: paul simon sang at the funeral for 27-year-old teacher victoria soto. she died trying to protect her first grade students. >> she gave her life
's the headline "gun nut, nra loon in bizarre rant." and "the hartford courant." chris murphy "walking out of another funeral and was handed the statement. the most tone deaf statement i've ever seen. just the reaction to the reaction to your words? >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our schools, then call me crazy. i think the american people think it's crazy not to do it. it's the one thing that will keep people safe and the nra is going to try to do that. we're going to support an immediate appropriation before congress to put them in school and we're going to work with asa hutchinson who has agreed to work with us, drawing on retired military, drawing on retired police, on former secret service and all these people that can actually go in and make our kids safe. that's the one thing that we can do. >> the one and only thing? you don't think guns should be part of the conversation. >> i think that's the one thing that will immediately make our children safe. >> is it the only thing? >> gun control, you could ban all dianne feinstein, do whatever she wants
